OpenAI has started testing ads inside ChatGPT’s Free and Go plan for users in the United States, marking a major shift for the widely used AI chatbot.
The company introduced the monthly $8 Go plan globally in January. Higher-cost subscriptions, like Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education, will remain ad-free for now.
Ads will appear below ChatGPT’s answers and are meant to help fund free and low-cost access without changing how responses are generated.
OpenAI says advertisers won’t influence what ChatGPT says, and won’t see users’ chats or personal data.
Users can dismiss ads, control personalization settings, or opt out by choosing an ad-free mode with lower message limits. Ads also won’t show up around sensitive topics or for users under 18.
The move has been criticized by rivals and some consumers, but OpenAI says advertising will help support broader access to advanced AI tools.
