The $15 a day toll for cars entering Manhattan is set to take effect in June|Kevin Coles|CC BY-NC 2.0

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) board voted yesterday to implement a congestion pricing scheme for Manhattan on Wednesday, aiming to boost public transit use and reduce daily vehicle entries by up to 20%.

It is also estimated to generate nearly $1 billion annually for other transit improvements.

Starting around June 15th, drivers entering Manhattan below 60th Street will face a $15 toll during the day and $3.75 at night.

Low-income drivers will receive a 50% discount, with tax credits for residents in the area.

Government workers and certain bus companies are also granted exemptions.

But the plan faces more than six legal challenges, including one from the neighboring state of New Jersey.
