American automaker General Motors and South Korea’s Hyundai Motor announced a partnership to co-develop five vehicles, aiming to cut costs and counter Chinese competition.
Four models—including a compact SUV, car, and mid-size pickup—are set to launch in Central and South America by 2028, supporting both internal combustion and hybrid engines. They plan to produce at least 800,000 units annually.
The companies will also build an electric commercial van in the US within the same timeline.
While analysts welcome the collaboration, some question its effectiveness against China’s low-cost EVs.
Experts say GM could gain from Hyundai’s hybrid tech, while the latter may benefit from General Motors’ US trade ties and pickup expertise.
