The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing $3.1 million in fines against Boeing for safety violations linked to the January 2024 midair door plug blowout on an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9.
The panel detached midair shortly after takeoff from Portland, Oregon, forcing an emergency landing. All 177 people on board survived without serious injuries.
The FAA says Boeing committed hundreds of safety violations between September 2023 and February 2024.
Inspectors found issues at Boeing’s 737 factory in Renton, Washington, and at subcontractor Spirit AeroSystems in Kansas. One Boeing employee allegedly pressured a company safety inspector to approve an aircraft that didn’t meet standards.
Boeing has 30 days to respond.
The company says it is reviewing the proposed fine and continues working under FAA oversight to strengthen safety culture and improve quality control.
