Starting January 29, Amazon Prime Video will start showing ads in movies and TV shows. Though the company says it will incorporate fewer ads than traditional TV, it is offering an option of paying an additional $2.99 a month to continue avoiding ads.

Following in the footsteps of Netflix and Disney, Amazon is adopting a hybrid model to balance ad revenue and subscription fees.

The move aligns with Amazon’s global strategy, and it plans to extend advertisements to the UK, Europe, Canada, Mexico and Australia next year.
