China’s Cyberspace Administration has barred Alibaba, ByteDance, and other firms from purchasing or testing Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D chip, designed for AI use and avoiding US export curbs.
The ban has paused thousands of orders since the chip’s July launch, according to the Financial Times. Nvidia shares dropped 2.7%, following the announcement.
CEO Jensen Huang expressed disappointment, noting the company had recently worked with President Donald Trump to allow sales of H20 chips to China in exchange for a 15% profit cut. He said the ban reflected broader US-China tensions.
The move follows Beijing’s recent actions against American chipmakers, including ruling that Nvidia’s $7 billion Mellanox acquisition violated antitrust law and launching an anti-dumping probe into US semiconductors such as those from Texas Instruments.
The development comes ahead of a Friday call between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
