McDonald’s is reviving its fan-favorite Monopoly promotion in the US on October 6. The game, last seen in 2014, is back with a digital twist.
Instead of collecting pieces on a board, customers will play through the McDonald’s app, available only to loyalty members.
How to play and win
Physical game pieces will still appear on select items like large fries, which can be peeled and scanned into the app.
Digital pieces also come with specific app orders. Completing property sets unlocks prizes, including free food, bonus reward points, 1 million American Airlines miles, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and even a $1 million cash prize.
Once a cultural craze, Monopoly at McDonald’s was marred by a $20 million fraud scandal that began in 1989 and was exposed by the FBI in 2001.
McDonald’s hopes the game will boost sales and loyalty memberships, which already account for 25% of the company's US business and have 185 million global users.
