Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and New York City remained under extreme heat warnings

A brutal heat wave scorches the eastern US with temperatures nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit for tens of millions in cities from St. Louis to Boston.

Thousands in Newark, New Jersey, and Baltimore lost electricity due to power outages triggered by excessive heat.

Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and New York City remained under extreme heat warnings.

At least one heat-related death has been reported in Missouri. In Paterson, New Jersey, 16 people were hospitalized for heat exhaustion, forcing five schools to reschedule graduation ceremonies.

There were 2,325 heat-related deaths in the US in 2023, according to a 2024 Journal of the American Medical Association report.

Officials warn the sweltering heat can increase health threats, especially for outdoor workers, vulnerable individuals and pets.
