Reno wildfire forces thousands to evacuate

A fast-moving wildfire tore through northwest Reno, Nevada, on Sunday, destroying homes and forcing about 90,000 people to evacuate or prepare to leave.

The Hawk Fire grew to more than 23 square miles near Peavine Peak in the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest. Strong, shifting winds pushed flames rapidly through dry vegetation, while firefighters struggled to reach hot spots.

Officials reported at least six injuries, including three first responders. They said the fire was human-caused but did not say whether it was accidental or intentional.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency and deployed National Guard troops and helicopters to support firefighting efforts.
