About 49% of Americans do not earn enough to cover basic needs, according to a new report by the Urban Institute.

The study finds that a US family with children needs roughly $145,000 a year to achieve economic security. In comparison, the median income for married couples stood at $128,700 in 2024, according to the US Census Bureau data.

What economic security covers
Researchers say true financial stability goes beyond survival. It includes paying for housing, food, healthcare, childcare, transportation, education, debt, and emergency and retirement savings. Rising costs continue to strain households, and even some six-figure earners say they struggle to pay bills.

Feeling stuck despite earnings
Experts say many Americans feel trapped financially despite stable jobs. Some manage bills but fail to build savings or get ahead. Higher incomes can improve stability, allowing families to invest in their future and well-being.

Single-parent families and renters face the biggest challenges, with nearly 90% and 80% below the threshold, respectively.
