California started sending stimulus checks of up to $1,050 to its 23 million taxpaying residents Friday. And other states like New York and Florida are planning to follow suit.

People are struggling due to rising prices and inflation. The payments, which are technically tax refunds, are meant “to help address rising costs,” per Governor Gavin Newsom’s office.

Who’s eligible?
Anyone who has filed their 2020 tax return by last October and makes less than $150,000 per year is eligible for the stimulus. There is no application process; the amount will be transferred automatically.

Other states to follow

As the midterms approach, at least 14 other states—including Hurricane Ian-hit Florida and New York—are thinking of sending stimulus checks this year.
