Columbia University has taken disciplinary actions against more than 70 students involved in two major campus protests, including the high-profile Butler Library sit-in in May that resulted in 80 detainments.
The on-campus protests called on the university to sever ties with Israel. The college’s sanctions range from probation, 2–3 year suspensions, degree revocations and expulsions.
A student group says the disciplinary letters demand an apology in order to return to campus or risk expulsion.
The crackdown follows federal pressure. The Trump administration cut around $400 million in research grants to Columbia in March. In July, the school agreed to policy changes, including a protest mask ban and ramped-up campus security.
