Last academic year, American universities saw a 35% jump in Indian students joining US campuses compared to a year earlier—almost bringing the international student population in the country to its pre-pandemic level of 1.1 million.

India and China
In 2022-23, around 269,000 Indian nationals studied in the US, almost leveling with Chinese students (290,000)—who are still the highest number of foreign scholars.

The growing young population of India—which became the most populous (1.486 billion) country in the world in April—has contributed to the student population.

China and US
The increasing political tensions between the US and China have stagnated Chinese student enrollment over the past few years.

South Korea, Canada, Vietnam, Taiwan and Nigeria also send the most students to the US, after China and India.
