The 2025 box office is ending with stellar ticket sales for James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has earned $88 million over the four-day Christmas holidays.
In North America, the movie generated $217.7 million and $760 million worldwide after two weekends of release. The third Avatar sequel cost Disney around $400 million to produce.
An unexpected holiday hit was A24’s Marty Supreme. The Josh Safdie-directed drama, starring Timothee Chalamet, earned $27.1 million.
The $70 million table-tennis drama secured the second-biggest opening in A24’s history, proving Chalamet’s marketing prowess and immense drawing power with the Gen Z audience.
Other notable releases include Sony’s action-comedy Anaconda ($23.7 million) starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, and the emotional musical Song Sung Blue ($12 million) featuring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. It earned an “A” CinemaScore from audiences.
Disney’s Zootopia 2 continues to perform steadily in its fifth weekend, with a global haul of $1.42 billion. The animated hit is the year’s highest-grossing Hollywood release.
Despite the strong finish, 2025 ends with a domestic total of $8.76 billion, which is 1.5% higher than 2024 but 22% lower than 2019.
