On September 3, you’ll be able to watch a movie in a theater for $3 only as opposed to the $9 you usually shell out. So, watch three.

It is part of an effort by the Cinema Foundation, a non-profit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners, to lure moviegoers during a quiet spell at the box office after “this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas.”

National Cinema Day
They’re calling September 3 the National Cinema Day, a trial of what could become an annual event.

More than 3,000 theaters across the country, with over 30,000 screens, will participate in this one-day event—the first ever movie-going-discount affair of this scale.

Celebration
Cinema Foundation president Jackie Brenneman said they wanted to “celebrate moviegoing” as theaters rebounded significantly over the summer, with business returning to nearly pre-pandemic levels.

“We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet,” Brenneman said.

Domestic summer box office ticket sales pushed to $3.3 billion as of August 21, thanks to films like “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Jurassic World Dominion”, per Comscore.
