Top radio jock Howard Stern teased an exit from his namesake SiriusXM show and being replaced by TV personality Andy Cohen on Monday, only to reveal moments later that he isn’t leaving.
The 71-year-old put an end to months of rumors speculating about retirement or firing from SiriusXM. He has successfully run the show since 1986. He acknowledged considering retirement but joked that the false news headlines about him meant he “can’t leave.”
He is negotiating a new deal with the radio since his current five-year contract, estimated at $100 million a year, expires at the end of 2025.
Since joining SiriusXM in 2006, Stern has been one of its biggest draws. A 2020 Credit Suisse analysis estimated that if he left, approximately 2.7 million listeners could cancel their radio corporation subscriptions.
SiriusXM’s subscriber base has slipped in the past five years, from 34 million to 33 million. The company has undergone layoffs but still says it wants Stern to stay.
