Ryan Coogler’s hit film Sinners has made history at the 98th Academy Awards by earning a record-breaking 16 nominations, the most ever for a single film.

The movie stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers running a blues club in 1930s Mississippi while battling racism and vampires. It has already earned $368 million worldwide. 

The film received major nods, including best picture, director, actor, and supporting roles, along with the Academy’s first-ever casting award.

Costume designer Ruth E. Carter became the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history, while cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw marked a rare female nomination in her field.

It surpasses the previous record of 14 nominations held by Titanic, All About Eve, and La La Land.

Other major contenders include One Battle After Another with 13 nods and Marty Supreme, Frankenstein, and Sentimental Value with nine each.

Meanwhile, international films dominated the 98th Oscar nominations, led by Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value with nine nods and Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent.

The Oscars will air on ABC on March 15 and stream on Hulu, with Conan O’Brien returning as host.
