The new Spider-Man movie has broken multiple box office records, setting new milestones for Marvel Studios and Sony and reaffirming the enduring appeal of superhero films.

A historic $360 million domestic opening—narrowly topping the $357.1 million debut of Avengers: Endgame—was just one milestone for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film also delivered record domestic and global openings for Sony Pictures, the Spider-Man franchise, director Destin Daniel Cretton, producer Amy Pascal, and lead actors Tom Holland and Zendaya.

Internationally, it set opening records across multiple territories, including India ($31.8 million), France ($26.6 million), Brazil ($23.8 million), Spain ($15.6 million), and between $5 million and $9 million in Peru, Colombia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Chile.

The success marks a turnaround for Marvel after signs that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s box office dominance was fading. Phase 5 ended last year with six films that earned a combined $3.65 billion worldwide, making it the MCU’s lowest-grossing phase.
