‘The Odyssey’ has surpassed ‘Obsession’ as the year’s top R-rated release|@odysseymovie|X
In just two weekends, Christopher Nolan’s R-rated, three-hour epic, The Odyssey, has crossed $639.6 million globally, earning $284.4 million domestically and $353.2 million internationally.
The film is the first feature-length production filmed entirely with 70mm Imax cameras and optimized for 70mm Imax screens that adheres to the 1.43:1 aspect ratio. Only 25 such venues exist across the country, prompting many cinephiles to travel hundreds of miles to attend screenings.
Other screens, including standard Imax formats, do not display the complete frame and instead cut off parts of the image at the top and bottom.
Milestones
During its first two weekends, the movie generated approximately $140 million in worldwide ticket sales from Imax locations, including theaters without 70mm screens.
Produced at a $250 million budget, the adaptation of Homer’s Greek epic has surpassed Obsession as the year’s top R-rated release.
As the Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland-led The Odyssey continues breaking milestones, Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has officially crossed $1 billion, reaching $1.022 billion worldwide to become the year’s top-grossing film, ahead of Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.011 billion) and Michael ($1.01 billion).
Overall, it has been a stellar 2026 for the Hollywood box office.
