California got clearance from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Friday to phase out a range of diesel-powered trucks in an effort to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions.

According to the EPA’s decision, California can enact its plan requiring truck manufacturers to sell more zero-emission trucks, box trucks, semitrailers and large passenger pick-ups over the next 20 years.

California’s transportation sector is responsible for 40% of greenhouse gasses emitted in the state. It has one of the worst air pollution levels in the country.

Around eight other states have shown interest in adopting California’s truck standards, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said.
