The failing resilience of Earth will make restricting global warming to 1.5 degrees impossible. We are already seeing it with increased wildfires, floods, and earthquakes this year|Anthony Quintano|CC BY 2.0

The Earth is not doing well. Six of the nine key indicators used to measure our planet’s health show it is “sick” with only ocean acidity, ozone layer and air quality at healthy levels.

The rest, climate change, biodiversity, chemical pollution, land, freshwater and Earth’s nutrients are all exceeding “safe operating space for humanity,” scientists said in this week’s issue of the Science Advances journal.

Professor Johan Rockstrom, who along with other researchers created the nine parameters for measuring Earth’s well-being in 2009, says the failing resilience of Earth will make restricting global warming to 1.5 degrees impossible.
