Harry Potter fans have successfully forced the rerouting of a $580 million undersea power cable between the UK and Ireland that would have passed through the beach memorial of the beloved character Dobby.

The house-elf character is known for helping Harry in several situations in the books and movies, eventually dying to save the boy. Dobby’s final scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 were filmed at Freshwater West beach in Wales, and since then a small memorial began in the spot.

Fans were distressed when they found out the power connection project was passing near Dobby’s beach spot. They made hundreds of calls to project officials. Etchea Energy CEO Simon Ludlam initially did not understand why the project had sparked such a strong reaction.

After learning about Dobby’s memorial and its importance to fans, Ludlam’s team changed the route to avoid the area.

However, the new route will pass close to Bronze Age remains, creating another challenge for the project.
