The FBI has reportedly instructed its agents across the country to volunteer for temporary assignments in Minneapolis as the city faces anti-ICE protests that intensified after the fatal shooting of civilian Renee Nicole Good on January 7.
Federal presence in the city has risen, with roughly 3,000 immigration officers currently deployed. It is far more than similar operations in cities like Chicago or Los Angeles.
Internal sources indicate that the agents will primarily investigate cases of assaults on federal officers and instances of vandalism and theft involving FBI vehicles.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has publicly demanded that ICE vacate the city, while President Donald Trump recently threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to address the demonstrations.
