A map service founded in the 1990s is seeing a massive revival after it said it would not rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” on its maps despite President Trump’s executive order.
As US-Canada trade tensions flared again, Trump ordered federal agencies last week to rename the water body “Lake America.”
MapQuest posted on social media that they are not changing the lake name, sparking a viral download surge that pushed the app to No. 1 in navigation, ahead of Google Maps in the US App Store.
It ranked No. 8 across all US apps and games and No. 2 in Canada.
According to Appfigures, MapQuest hit 80,000 iOS downloads on Sunday, a dramatic uptick from its early-August daily average of 500.
Google Maps adopted the lake name change over the weekend, citing official government databases, and is facing some backlash.
Trump has asked Apple to switch to Lake America, but as of Monday night, Apple Maps still displayed Lake Ontario.
MapQuest’s latest stance mirrors its 2025 decision to keep calling the Gulf of Mexico by its original name after Trump renamed it the “Gulf of America.”
