High-stakes discussions between the US and Iran in Geneva have concluded without a breakthrough, though Iranian officials have stated more “detailed” talks would follow.
Mediated by Oman and led by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, the talks focused on two main pillars: dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities and terminating US economic sanctions on Tehran.
Both parties remain deadlocked over the above issues, with President Trump recently emphasizing that Iran must explicitly renounce nuclear weapons development. The US is also pushing for Iran to stop oppressing domestic protestors, curb its ballistic missile program, and end its support for regional armed groups.
Oman’s foreign minister said American and Iranian delegates will meet again in Vienna next week to discuss technical details.
