The action comes as the national diesel price averages $6.28 per gallon ahead of the US midterms
President Donald Trump said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday to reach a deal to import diesel to counter high domestic fuel costs, a rare move that has drawn some criticism.
In a Truth Social post yesterday, Trump said he had held talks with the Russian president, during which Moscow agreed to provide 300,000 tons of diesel fuel for American and international markets, an additional 500,000 tons in November, and a further 1 million tons immediately afterward.
Additionally, the Treasury Department lifted sanctions on Russian diesel through April 2027. The action comes as the national diesel price averages $6.28 per gallon ahead of the US midterms.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the deal, calling it a “weak decision.”
Meanwhile, Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer, Jeanne Shaheen, and Elizabeth Warren heavily criticized the move, calling it a betrayal of Ukraine, European allies, and US national security.
