The US and Chinese officials discussed for over five hours, aiming to extend the 90-day tariff suspension placed in May|Public Domain
Top US and Chinese officials, including Treasury Chief Scott Bessent and China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng, met in Stockholm on Monday to discuss the fragile trade truce between the two nations.
The talks, which lasted over five hours, focused on extending the 90-day tariff suspension agreed upon in May. Under the current arrangement, the US reduced trade tariffs on most Chinese imports to 30% from 145%, while China lowered its duties on American goods to 10% from 125%.
With the temporary tariff deal set to expire on August 12, both sides face mounting pressure to reach a long-term agreement to avoid a snapback to triple-digit tariffs—an outcome that could trigger a full-blown trade embargo.
The meeting follows the US's recent trade deal with the EU and a reported pause on new tech export restrictions to China.
Talks are expected to resume on Tuesday and are viewed as a strategic step toward a potential summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
