There is still a question of whether Mark Carney’s party will be able to secure majority seats in Parliament|@MarkJCarney|X

The Liberals in Canada are rejoicing as current Prime Minister Mark Carney is projected to win the snap election, securing another four years for a party that was deeply unpopular as recently as December.

At the time of writing, the Liberals were in the lead and had won 127 seats, while the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre held 89; the Bloc Quebecois had secured 16.

It remains uncertain whether Carney’s party will achieve a majority in Parliament.

Election analysts view the results as a dramatic turnaround for the Liberals. Under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, the party was trailing the Conservatives by more than 20 points.

Canadians’ frustration over the rising costs, housing shortages and loose immigration policies had driven support away from the Liberals.

However, things changed when President Donald Trump took office in January, imposing 25% tariffs on Canada and even suggesting the possibility of annexation.

Carney’s pledge to protect Canada’s sovereignty and stand against Trump’s tariff threats appears to have resonated strongly with voters.
