A catastrophic flash flood and mudslide struck Nepal and neighboring Tibet on Wednesday after a Himalayan glacial collapse sent a massive surge of ice, rock and debris into a mountain river.
The disaster has killed at least 165 people and left nearly 1,500 missing, according to reports.
Videos circulating online show people fleeing as powerful floodwaters swept away bridges, homes, roads and critical infrastructure, including hydropower facilities.
Over half of the missing are foreign nationals, including at least 47 Americans who lost contact after the floods hit the Rasuwa region, according to the Nepali Tourism Board.
The flooding also devastated a key route connecting Kathmandu with Lhasa, leaving trekkers and pilgrims stranded. Nepali authorities have warned that the death toll could rise as rescuers reach more affected areas.
Nepali Army personnel and other emergency teams are continuing search-and-rescue operations amid difficult conditions.
