The UN Security Council (UNSC) on Monday overwhelmingly approved a US-drafted resolution backing President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, giving Washington a major diplomatic win.
While Russia and China abstained, 13 members voted in favor. Several countries backed the plan despite concerns about the timeline for Palestinian statehood and the role of the Palestinian Authority.
The resolution grants a legal mandate to create an International Stabilization Force that will assume security in areas of Gaza vacated by Israeli forces.
US Ambassador Michael Waltz thanked members for charting a new course and said the vote shows broad support for Trump’s vision.
Hamas rejected the resolution, calling it insufficient for Palestinian political and humanitarian needs. Arab support ultimately helped secure passage, despite disagreements persisting over the path to a two-state solution.
