Between 2020 and 2023, yearly abortions rose by 10% in the US, with medicated abortions becoming more common than ever despite the reversal of Roe v. Wade that revoked the federal right to terminate a pregnancy in June 2022, found a report published yesterday.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, over 1 million clinician-provided abortions were performed in 2023, and medication abortions accounted for 63% of those—up from 53% in 2020.

While states with total bans experienced a virtual halt in abortions, neighboring and unrestricted states witnessed a 25% rise.

The report comes a week before the Supreme Court hears arguments in a case that may restrict nationwide access to mifepristone, a commonly used critical abortion drug.
