A report by the CDC shows that 60% of US teenage girls faced mental health issues like anxiety and depression in 2021—double than a decade ago.

The number is twice what was reported by teenage boys.

Teenage girls were “engulfed in a growing wave of sadness, violence, and trauma,” and felt “persistently sad,” says the report.

Not just teen girls, LGBTQIA+ youth are also among the most affected, said the report that surveyed nearly 17,000 students in 2021.

Nearly 30% of teenage girls have seriously considered a suicide attempt.

Teens and mental health
The report reiterates concerns from experts that pandemic isolation, shortage of mental health professionals in schools and increased reliance on social media are the major reasons for the spike.

School districts have sued social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Youtube for their harmful and exploitative content that affects youth mental health.
