Fearing legal consequences, the country’s second-largest pharmacy chain, Walgreens, announced it would not sell an abortion pill, mifepristone, in around 20 states, including in states where abortion remains legal.
The announcement comes as a response to a letter sent to CVS and Walgreens last month by attorneys general in 20 conservative-led states. The letter threatened legal action if the pharmacy sold mifepristone.
Deep cut and confusion
The announcement brings forth a frustrating scenario for many women. In January, the FDA announced that certified retail pharmacies can dispense abortion medication, mifepristone, to those who have a prescription from a certified provider.
The pharmacies are forced to choose between lawyer fees and women’s basic human rights.
