The proposed law allows employees to ignore unreasonable work calls and messages from bosses after work hours

Soon Australian workers can ignore their boss’ call after working hours, without any penalties. They still would have to see him at the office, the next day.

The country’s Senate passed a bill yesterday allowing employees to legally ignore work calls and messages from bosses after work hours. Employers who violate this rule could be fined.

The “right to disconnect” is part of proposed changes to labor laws—supported by a majority of senators—aiming to safeguard workers’ rights and promote work-life balance.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the importance of not penalizing workers who aren’t paid around the clock.

Not just Australia
France pioneered such a law in 2017. Other countries like Italy, Portugal and Kenya have also followed suit or are in the process of passing such laws.
