New York City has surpassed the San Francisco Bay Area to claim the top spot for tech jobs in the US for the first time in 13 years, according to real estate firm CBRE’s annual survey.
The “Scoring Tech Talent” report covers 75 markets in North America. New York now leads with 394,300 tech jobs, edging out the Bay Area’s 375,730.
The shift stems from Silicon Valley layoffs alongside aggressive hiring in NY’s finance and AI sectors.
Additionally, stricter in-person mandates for AI roles helped fuel NYC’s tech labor growth.
Remote job postings are declining nationwide. In the Bay Area, it dropped from 24% in mid-2022 to 7% as of April 2026.
Both San Francisco and New York added more than 20,000 AI-oriented jobs in the past year.
