William Lewis was appointed the CEO in 2023

The Washington Post’s William Lewis has stepped down as CEO, just days after the massive layoffs he presided over at the newspaper. He is departing after less than 3 years in the role.

Lewis, a former Dow Jones and Wall Street Journal executive, said the timing of his exit felt appropriate and described the layoffs as “difficult decisions” made to secure the publication’s future.

Chief Financial Officer Jeff D’Onofrio will serve as acting publisher and CEO.

The Post’s job cuts were severe for global news teams and have sparked intense backlash from journalists and the public alike. Some have set up a GoFundMe page to help international workers who were fired and lack financial protection.

The Jeff Bezos-owned company struggles to reverse financial losses stemming from AI, which has led to a 50% decline in website visits over the last three years.
