Democratic Eric Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor on Sunday as pressure mounted over sexual assault allegations being placed against him.

The congressman said he would fight the claims, calling them false, but admitted mistakes in judgment in a post on X.

The controversy erupted after reports detailed accusations from several women, including one former staffer who alleged sexual assault in 2024. Swalwell denied all accusations.

Senior Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, urged a transparent investigation, while several lawmakers called for his resignation from Congress. A local prosecutor has launched a probe into the claims.

Swalwell, a congressman since 2013, had been a leading contender in a tightly contested primary race scheduled for June.

The race now shifts to the remaining contenders, including Tom Steyer and Katie Porter.
