Speaker Mike Johnson is not planning on using ‘suspension of rules’ to fast-track the measure
House Speaker Mike Johnson said in an interview that he’s confident he has enough Republican support to reopen the government next week as a partial shutdown continues.
On NBC’s Meet the Press, Johnson addressed the congressional impasse that triggered the shutdown early Saturday.
Johnson said he’s not relying on Democratic votes to fast-track the measure. He added he won’t use “suspension of the rules,” which would require two-thirds support to fund most of the government for the fiscal year and the Department of Homeland Security for two weeks.
House Democrats want guarantees that changes to DHS immigration operations will be settled before they vote on the spending package.
