Former special counsel Jack Smith faced a tense Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday as Republicans challenged his investigations into President Donald Trump and his prosecutorial decisions.
The hearing focused on Smith’s decisions to prosecute Trump over classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and efforts to overturn the 2020 election, as well as his team’s use of subpoenas.
Smith defended the investigations, saying prosecutors followed evidence and that he would have charged any president under similar circumstances.
He also defended obtaining phone records from Republican lawmakers, arguing they helped investigators trace communications surrounding the January 6 US Capitol attack. He also criticized the firing of former members of his team after Trump returned to office.
The hearing repeatedly descended into personal attacks, with senators accusing Smith of political bias while Democrats defended his investigation.
One heated exchange also centered on a mistaken claim about Smith attending an Atlanta Hawks game. Smith clarified that he had attended an Iowa Hawkeyes game instead.
