President Joe Biden on Thursday announced that his administration would cover the full cost for the next month to help Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Fiona.

The move will cover the costs of removing debris, providing food and shelter, restoring power and water supplies, and assisting in search and rescue operations.

The announcement comes a day after Biden issued a major disaster declaration for Puerto Rico on Wednesday, which had already unlocked federal funds for removing debris and providing emergency protective measures, among other services.

The President tweeted, “We're surging federal resources to Puerto Rico, and we’ll do everything we can to meet their urgent needs and help rebuild.”

Hurricane Fiona has claimed the lives of eight people in the Caribbean so far and has left more than a million without power.
