Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City’s mayor on Thursday, promising to govern as a democratic socialist.

Mamdani outlined an agenda focused on safety, affordability, and abundance, rejecting calls to soften his views after winning the election.

He highlighted campaign promises that fueled his rise, including free childcare, free bus service, and a rent freeze for tenants in rent-stabilized apartments. Mamdani pledged to hold landlords accountable for unsafe housing, resolve 311 violations, and maintain the mayoral Office to Combat Antisemitism.

The ceremony drew national attention, with speeches from progressive leaders in Congress, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, who signaled clear opposition to current White House policies.

Following his oath, Mamdani signed three executive orders aimed at improving housing affordability and revoked several orders issued the day after former mayor Eric Adams was indicted, giving his administration a fresh start.

At 34, Mamdani is NYC’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, and the youngest leader in over a century.
