A revolt by the ultra-conservative members of the Republican Party against Speaker Kevin McCarthy has paralyzed the US House of Representatives.

The dispute was triggered by dissatisfaction within the House Freedom Caucus over a bipartisan debt ceiling bill that McCarthy and President Joe Biden brokered.

The conservatives claim that the deal fell short and violated previous agreements on spending reductions.

71 Republicans rejected the debt ceiling proposal that the House passed last week, which included the hardliners. McCarthy and other House Republican leaders have dismissed the claims of retaliation.

The dispute has halted routine procedural votes and is postponed until Monday.

The internal division threatens the passage of spending bills, risking a government shutdown caused by the conservative opposition previously.
