Driving the trend are soaring rents and housing costs
As the affordable housing crisis and inflation continue to hit Americans, a survey from Realtor.com reveals a record 25.2 million adults under 35 lived with parents in 2025—nearly 1 in 3 youngsters.
The data further show that 70% of 25- to 34-year-olds are employed.
Driving the trend are soaring rents and housing costs. Just last year,
- Median home price hit $430,000, up 34.4% from 2019.
- Rents averaged $1,673, up 17.9% from before COVID-19.
The costs, compounded by a 4-million-unit housing deficit, are making moving out and living on their own unaffordable for many millennials and Gen Zers.
Pew Research Center data show that 72% of young adults who live with parents financially contribute; 65% cover expenses like groceries, and 46% pay rent or mortgage payments.
Overall, only 36% of those under 35 feel ready for homeownership.
