As the holiday season approaches, so does the often-frustrating task of returning unwanted gifts. That process may be tougher this year, as major retailers tighten return policies by adding new fees and stricter deadlines.
According to the National Retail Federation, nearly three-quarters of stores now impose return fees for online orders sent back by mail.
Major brands leading this shift
Marshall’s and TJ Maxx charge $11.99 per returned package. Macy’s, JCPenney, and J.Crew charge fees ranging from $7.50 to $10, which are typically deducted directly from a customer’s refund.
Return windows
Amazon and Walmart offer a return window until January 31 for holiday purchases made in November and December. Target’s deadline arrives on January 24, and Best Buy requires returns by January 15.
To avoid these extra charges, consumers can often return items directly to a physical store or join a retailer’s loyalty program. Macy’s has no return fees for its loyalty members.
