Scientists have discovered the nearest-known black hole to Earth—1,6000 lightyears away—confirming for the first time that a dormant stellar-mass black hole exists in the Milky Way.

Named Gaia BH1, the black hole is located in the constellation Ophiuchus and is around 10 times the size of the Sun.
