American brain-computer interface (BCI) startup Paradromics has successfully implanted and removed its Connexus BCI in a human for the first time.
While not yet FDA-approved, Paradromics says the implant safely recorded brain activity, validating its human compatibility after years of animal testing. It aims to help people with severe motor impairments.
The procedure was done during an epilepsy surgery at the University of Michigan.
It marks a major milestone for the company. With nearly $100 million raised, including a partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Neom in February, the neural tech firm plans to begin long-term clinical trials later this year.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s Neuralink has raised $650 million in its latest funding round.
