Greece will ban social media for kids aged 15 and under from 2027

Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that the country will officially ban children under the age of 15 from accessing social media from next year.

He said the move is needed to tackle rising anxiety, sleep disorders, and the addictive nature of digital platforms among young users.

Greece’s initiative follows a February poll showing about 80% public support for such restrictions. It also builds on existing domestic measures, including a ban on mobile phones in schools.

While Australia recently became the first nation to implement a similar ban for those under 16, Greece is positioning itself as a leader within Europe. Mitsotakis has formally urged the EU to establish a unified “digital age of majority” at 15 across the bloc.
