A new Instagram feature that debuted this week, allowing people to share their geolocations with followers, is facing backlash as users claim their locations were automatically on without choosing for it.
The Instagram Map tool, similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map, is off by default, according to Meta. Instagram head Adam Mosseri denied that locations are shared without consent, saying it requires explicit double confirmation.
Still, some users reported that the feature was switched on for them despite restrictive phone settings. Critics on Threads warned it could endanger vulnerable users, such as those with restraining orders, by enabling stalking.
Posts sharing how people can turn off their Instagram location are garnering millions of views on social media platforms like X.
