X’s US user base has shrunk since 2021, while Reddit use has climbed to 26%

Americans are spreading their social media use across many platforms, leaving X for Reddit and TikTok, mirroring the fragmented traditional news landscape, a new Pew Research report finds.

The shift makes it harder for companies and public figures to reach large audiences reliably.

Pew surveyed 5,022 US adults and found that YouTube (84%), Facebook (71%), and Instagram (50%) remain the most widely used platforms.

Meanwhile, X’s US user base has shrunk since 2021, while Reddit use has climbed to 26%, up from 18% four years ago, especially among adults aged 18–29.

YouTube continues to dominate among teens and younger adults, but TikTok and Snapchat hold strong appeal for those under 30.

Notably, Meta-owned WhatsApp’s use is rising steadily, reaching 32% of US adults.
