The California legislation prohibits tech companies from serving addictive feeds, endless scrolling, and autoplayed videos to users under 16

TikTok, Meta, and Google have separately sued to block a California child safety law that would take effect on January 1, arguing it infringes upon their First Amendment rights.

Signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September, the legislation bars tech companies from offering addictive feeds, infinite scrolling, and autoplay videos to users under 16 and requires stricter age verification.

Tech companies say the restrictions limit free expression, dictate content curation, and undermine parental authority.

These legal challenges arrive amid mounting scrutiny over social media risks to minors.

In August, Meta agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle landmark litigation over teen social media addiction brought by nearly every state. TikTok settled related claims with Alabama in September.
